Pécs is the largest city of region Southern Transdanubia. It was established on the beautiful southern part of region, close to rivers Drava and Danube, in the shadows of Mecsek hills. Land surrounding the city had important impact on today`s appearance – the old city centre lies on the valley`s plain, while traditional houses lay higgledy-piggledy around the hills and glimpse of the newer parts of the city can be seen only from the highest peaks or the highest viewing points. It is therefore not strange for Pécs to be considered more as a village than as a city, as its real size can be admired only when we ascend to the heights of the surrounding hills.
Diverse Southern Transdanubia

Southern Transdanubia is the second most visited region in Hungary right after county`s capital Budapest, mainly due to famous Lake Balaton. With exception of this tourist gem the Southern Transdanubia remains one of the least known destinations which is in large part a consequence of the lack of bigger cities.
Southern Transdanubia consists of three countries: Somogy, Baranya and Tolna. On one end the region is borderline with Lake Balaton, on the other with Croatian border. It is interesting to know that Lake Balaton actually lies in two different regions. But do not worry, you can find information about all destinations surrounding the whole lake in the subpage about Balaton – here.
Intact nature and world renowned wines
The whole Southern Transdanubia is famous for its great Mediterranean climate, unforgettable natural attractions and quite amazing intactness. It is here that the Hungary slowly transforms into Croatia, which is clearly visible in local customs’, traditions and style of living. Two main rivers, Drava and Danube have huge impact on everyday life of locals, and friendly farmers and wine makers have found incredible ways to exploit rivers giving in the best possible ways. And so did the uncommon animal species that are frequent guests who come to hunt and nest in the proximity of large waters.
Small regional cities are full of cultural attractions and hidden traces of rough historical times. Tables of hospitable locals are usually covered with homemade watermelons, figs, goat cheese and almonds, and a glass of local wine is basically an essential drink. Tourist farms are almost surely the best place to try local goulash with mixed meat, while many restaurants around Balaton offer the culinary specialities containing freshwater fishes.
Cities of Southern Transdanubia

The lack of bigger cities in region left enough space for smaller towns to steadily grow into very charming and diverse centres with pleasant atmospheres. Each city has its own soul and is completely different from its neighbours. City of artists – Kaposvár, industrial downtown of Szekzsárd, fateful Mohács and Páks with its unusual architecture are just some of the most outstanding destinations in Southern Transdanubia.
All of the above present great ideas for a pleasant afternoon of exploring which can be combined with some relaxing time in nature. Wilderness can be admired from the horseback or while hiding in different shelters created for bird watchers. Numerous spas and health centres are among the best in Hungary.
It is the healthy lifestyle and wish for relaxation and wellbeing that drives people to Southern Transdanubia. Although Pécs itself doesn`t have much to offer in this field, you will not be disappointed by the offer of nearby destinations. Its big advantage is closeness to most of region`s main attractions and pretty good road connections.
Exploring Southern Transdanubia
In comparison with other parts of Hungary you will not need a lot of time to discover the main attractions of Southern Transdanubia. Most parts of the region, except for Lake Balaton in summer months, are almost undiscovered and not very popular among tourists. That is why they represent a great last minute trip or vacation.
I would recommend you to explore Southern Transdanubia in three distinct ways. Take time for a round trip around Lake Balaton. Reserve a week vacation in Pecs and explore the city and places nearby. Or, take a week or two to explore the unbeaten paths around other parts of Southern Transdanubia. Either way, you will not regret the time spend in this hidden gem of Hungary!
