Just next to the impressive Pécs Cathedral lies one of the most charming and lesser-known spots in the city of Pécs – the Barbican, part of the historic city walls surrounded by greenery and quiet pathways. This area is perfect for a relaxing break while exploring the city, combining history, architecture, and a peaceful atmosphere.
The Barbican – A 15th-Century Defensive Tower
The Barbican (Hungarian: Barbakán) is a circular defensive tower built in the 15th century as part of the fortification system protecting the bishop’s residence and the cathedral area.
Unlike some myths, the structure was not part of a water system, but a military defense element, designed to control access and protect the city walls. Barbicans were common in medieval Europe, but the one in Pécs is among the few preserved examples in Hungary.
Key features include:
- massive circular structure
- thick stone walls
- connection to the city fortifications
- elevated strategic position
Today, the tower remains well preserved and stands as an important reminder of the city’s medieval past.

Walking Along the City Walls
Around the Barbican, you will find a pleasant walking path following the remains of the old city walls. This area is much quieter than the busy city center, making it ideal for a relaxed stroll.
From certain points along the walls, you can enjoy views over Pécs and its surroundings. The walk is especially beautiful in the late afternoon, when the sunlight highlights the texture of the historic stone.
The Bishop’s Garden and Janus Pannonius
Near the Barbican lies a peaceful garden that once formed part of the bishop’s complex. Here you will find a statue of Janus Pannonius, one of the most important Renaissance humanists of Hungary.
The statue was created by sculptor Miklós Borsos. Interestingly, part of the face is intentionally obscured, as no accurate historical depiction of the poet exists.
Today, the garden is a quiet place to relax, often visited by locals and students.

The “Garden of Culture” – A Different Side of Pécs
If you continue along the walls, you will reach an area often referred to as the Garden of Culture. Unlike traditional parks, this space has a more alternative and relaxed atmosphere.
Here you can find:
- small art installations
- viewpoints along the walls
- cafés or restaurants with scenic terraces
It is a place where history meets a more contemporary, local vibe.
